Tens of thousands of protesters turned out on the National Mall Sunday to encourage President Obama to make good on his commitment to act on climate change.

In his Inaugural address from outside the U.S. Capitol, the president said: "We will respond to the threat of climate change knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations."

Just a few weeks later, next to the Washington Monument, Paul Birkeland was one of a couple dozen people holding a long white tube above their heads.

"It's a backbone. It's a spine. The idea is to ask the president to have some spine and stand up to oil companies. And reject the Keystone Pipeline," Birkeland says.

The activists are focusing on the Keystone XL pipeline because it would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. To make this oil, companies use complex extraction and processing techniques that use a lot of energy. So it has a larger greenhouse gas footprint than conventional crude.

Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse from Rhode Island told the crowd that Congress is sleepwalking through the crisis on climate change. But he said protesters have an important ally.

"There's a man over there in the White House, he has found his voice on climate change. Are we going to have his back," Whitehouse asked.

Other speakers sounded less sure of the president's intentions.

Van Jones, a former adviser to President Obama, says that it would be disastrous if the project gets a green light.

"It would be like lighting a fuse on a carbon bomb ? that's what it would be like Mr. President," Jones says.

The Obama administration already let the southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline go ahead. The State Department is expected to decide soon on the part that would cross the border from Canada and stretch to Oklahoma.

Organizers say it was the biggest climate rally ever in the United States. They claim about 35,000 people participated ? although there was no independent crowd count.

The crowd did stretch for several blocks as it made its way around the White House. Despite a cold wind and snow flurries, parents brought along young children.

Heather Clark wrapped her two toddlers in a sleeping bag and put them in their stroller.

"Events like Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina and everything that I've been reading lately says it's happening. And if we don't do something really, really soon we're all going to be in a state where we don't recognize the planet where we live," Clark says.

Buses brought college students from many states to the National Mall.

Will Jones, was one of them, traveling overnight from Eastern Michigan University. He thinks the president is under a lot of pressure from oil companies.

"Now is the time for him to man up a little bit and make a decision. That's what he's in office to do," Jones says.

But some energy experts say environmentalists are focusing too much on Keystone. They argue that even if that pipeline isn't built, Canadian Tar sands oil will find another way to flow.

Retired Army Col. Dan Nolan represents a group of national security experts called Operation Free. He says there are clear national security benefits to getting more oil from Canada.

"We're putting America's sons and daughters at risk by having to protect oil production capability in the Middle East," Nolan says.

The real challenge he says is to shift the world off oil and other fossil fuels.

ACE Fitness Certifications Review | Which one to choose?

Male and female ACE certified fitness professionals posing together for photo with gym in the background..

American Council on Exercise (ACE) offers four different fitness certifications to suit the needs of different types of health & fitness professionals.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is the largest nonprofit organization for fitness certification, education, and training in the world. Founded in 1985, ACE has become an established resource for fitness trainers and clients, holding claim to some of the most comprehensive, unbiased scientific research in the fitness industry. This dedication as a leader among fitness organizations is evident as ACE provides a vast array of certifications designed to complement any fitness minded career path. Furthermore, ACE offers arguably the most accessible continuing education opportunities and professional resources to its certification holders.

The following four NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) accredited certifications are currently offered by ACE: Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Health Coach, and Advanced Health & Fitness Specialist.

ACE Personal Trainer Certification

Since ACE is highly recognized in the fitness industry, those focused on having a future in personal training can be confident with their choice of becoming an ACE certified personal trainer. This certification includes learning the ACE Integrated Fitness Training model (ACE IFT), which is a newly developed personal training system that combines cardiorespiratory training with functional movement and resistance training. It also integrates stability, mobility and movement training to improve both performance and fitness.

ACE IFT promotes trainer-client interaction, something very important for client retention. This personal trainer certification will not only give you all of the tools that you need to be an excellent trainer, but to be a successful one as well. By teaching you how to form and maintain a good working relationship with your clients, you will have the skills to establish rapport and make a strong connection. This makes you better equipped to meet all of your clients? fitness needs and keep their business as well.

Certification Prerequisites & Exam Cost

You must be 18 years old and have a current adult CPR/AED certification and present a current government-issued photo ID. The exam is taken at one of their computer-based testing centers and with 500 testing center locations, finding a location near you is easy and you get your exam score immediately ? no waiting to find out if you passed.

It costs $399 for the exam alone, or anywhere from $499 to $699 for the exam plus study materials depending on the certification package that you choose.

Learn more about the certification packages available to become an ACE Certified Personal Trainer.

ACE Group Fitness Instructor Certification

This certification is geared towards those who are interested in leading workouts in a group setting. You will be trained to help motivate, lead, and educate clients towards improving their health. Though having potential to be very lucrative, not all clients prefer group fitness as it takes away from the one on one attention and customization that many clients want and need. However, with only so many hours in a day, group fitness can earn you a lot of money in a short amount of time and your answer to those who enjoy that workout setting.

Holding this certification means that you are knowledgeable about injury prevention, class design, anatomy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, instructional techniques, and cuing. Employers will know with the ACE group fitness instructor certification that you?re able to skillfully and effectively lead group exercise classes. Also, you will be more attractive to potential employers in general because ACE has a well-known standard of quality in the fitness industry.

With this certification, you will get support from ACE as long as your certification is up to date; support is also available from other ACE certified fitness professionals by email, phone, or live chat.

Certification Prerequisites & Exam Cost

You must be 18 years old and have a current adult CPR/AED certification and present a current government-issued photo ID.

Exam study packages range from $189.95 to $499.95. It?s important to note the exam registration voucher cannot be purchased individually for the Group Fitness Instructor certification. Only the $499.95 study bundle includes an exam voucher which allows you to take computer-based exam within 6 months.

ACE Health Coach Certification

This certification is an excellent credential for fitness, medical, allied health and human resource professionals. The ACE Health Coach certification focuses on integrating fitness, nutrition and the science behind behavior modification. Currently, the only Health Coach certification accredited by the NCCA, it easily brings together your current career with a holistic approach to health.

Health coaches help people in making lifestyle and diet changes that are necessary to improve their health. As a certified ACE Health Coach, you will be able to teach your clients about proper nutrition, map out exercise plans, and help them with any lifestyle or behavioral changes they might need to make. As a health coach your goal is to inspire, motivate, and support your clients every step of the way on their journey to achieving optimal health and wellness.

Holding the ACE Health Coach certification shows that you are well-versed in exercise science, nutrition, coaching strategies and client communication. This includes goal setting, how to motivate, designing programs for clients with specific needs (obese, diabetic, pregnant, geriatric, eating disorders, and other diseases), how to give feedback and encourage clients, proper nutrition, tools to educate clients, exercise physiology, kinesiology, and anatomy, psychological factors associated with the coach-client relationship, different learning styles, and strategies to facilitate changes in behavior.

Certification Prerequisites & Exam Cost

To sit for this exam, you must be 18 years old, have a current government-issued CPR/AED certification and submit supporting documentation showing you have either an NCCA-accredited certification in fitness, nutrition, health care, wellness, human resources or a related field or an associate?s or higher degree from an accredited academic institution or comparable work experience in any of these specified fields.

You can purchase an exam-only voucher for $399 or have the option of choosing from two ACE Health Coach certification packages priced at $499 or $599 ? both of which include an exam voucher. Each bundle contains various study materials designed to help you pass the exam and become certified.

Why America Is Losing the War Against China's Hacker Spies (Yahoo Security)

Forget? The New York Times?and? The Wall Street Journal.?Chinese hackers are on a digital espionage campaign targeting a vast array of pretty much any major American organization "with intellectual property to protect," and now that there's a rare human side to combatting the malware attacks, we know there's not enough being done to stop the hackers yet.

RELATED: China Hacked the New York Times for Four Months Straight

In a new cover story,?Bloomberg Businessweek's Dune Lawrence?and?Michael Riley?follow one of the American malware experts attempting to fight the war on hackers, and he reveals a long ? even impossible ? battle ahead. Since he began tracking Chinese hackers in 2004 at Dell SecureWorks, Joe Stewart has had two big successes in spy hunting, as he unveiled the identities of the hackers "Zhang" and "Cyb3rsleuth." Stewart even manages to connect Cyb3rsleuth to the People?s Liberation Army's Information Engineering University. And he doesn't exactly deny Lawrence and Riley's assertion that the ongoing Chinese malware spying goes straight to the top:

RELATED: US Intelligence Says It's Not Just China Spying on Us

?

Investigators at dozens of commercial security companies suspect many if not most of those hackers either are military or take their orders from some of China?s many intelligence or surveillance organizations.

Indeed, the?Businessweek?story builds on growing fears that Chinese hackers might be targeting a whole lot more than just a couple of newspapers in the United States. A secret intelligence estimate described by?The Washington Post this week?"describes a wide range of sectors that have been the focus of hacking over the past five years, including energy, finance, information technology, aerospace and automotives." That's a lot of trade secrets, and it appears to be the impetus behind an executive order issued on Tuesday by President Obama for government and the private sector to collaborate on cybersecurity threats. Congress is also taking up the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act in an effort to shore up what security hawks see as holes in Obama's order. At the State of the Union on Tuesday, the president devoted a surprisingly large part of his address to hacking:

Now, we know hackers steal people?s identities and infiltrate private e-mails. We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, our air traffic control systems. We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy.

Unfortunately, it may also take years before the full extent of the threat from China can be addressed head-on. As the U.S. government and those major, say, financial institutions start to connect on security issues, our private malware defenders can't even add up their success stories to anything that will actually stop the hacks from growing ? or that will actually get China to admit what's going on. From Businessweek:?

Outing one person involved in the hacking teams won?t stop computer intrusions from China. Zhang?s a cog in a much larger machine and, given how large China?s operations have become, finding more Zhangs may get easier. Show enough of this evidence, Stewart figures, and eventually the Chinese government can?t deny its role. ?It might take several more years of piling on reports like that to make that weight of evidence so strong that it?s laughable, and they say, ?Oh, it was us,? ? says Stewart. ?I don?t know that they?ll stop, but I would like to make it a lot harder for them to get away with it.?

That's right, it will take years longer for China to even pay attention to the American counter-offensive. As the Bloomberg?piece explains, these hacks are a "continuous invasion," and America is totally outnumbered. In the last 10 months, Chinese hackers have doubled their forces, with 10 teams deploying 300 malware groups. "There is a tremendous amount of manpower being thrown at this from their side," Stewart, the face of our anti-malware campaign. told Businessweek. Meanwhile, most American businesses and agencies are "outmatched by an enemy with vast resources and a long head-start," Lawrence and Riley write.?

RELATED: China Hacked the Wall Street Journal, Too

There is one slightly encouraging tid-bit in the?Bloomberg?piece, however. At least some of our important national security organizations have enough resources to combat the hackers. Lawrence and Riley list the Pentagon and a "handful of three letter organizations" as "possibly" having enough manpower to combat the vast Chinese effort. So, there's that, and that's why Obama is doubling down.?

College Democrats, Republicans join Ivy League clubs in supporting marriage equality

The Republican and Democratic clubs of the Ivy League have come together to publicly support marriage equality.

A joint statement released Thursday marks the first time several of the clubs, including the Columbia University College Republicans, officially supported marriage for same-sex couples.

?We, the College Democrats and College Republicans chapters of the Ivy League, endorse marriage equality and challenge our nation?s leaders to join us in defense of marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples," the statement reads.

CUCR typically doesn?t take public stances on any political issues, president Tyler Trumbach, CC ?13, said.

?We think it?s the right thing to do now. Personally, I think we should have done this years ago,? Trumbach said. ?It?s important for us to do this now to let people know that not all Republicans agree with the mainstream Republican party?especially young Republicans don?t all agree with that message.?

The idea for the statement came from students at the University of Pennsylvania, who reached out to the other clubs, seeking support for an Ivy-wide statement.

?When we got the email, we said of course we?ll sign, this is a no-brainer,? Columbia University Democrats president Janine Balekdjian, CC ?13, said. ?We?ve been for marriage equality since way, way before I got to Columbia, and we were just very excited to hear that the Columbia Republicans had signed on.?

The two Columbia groups released an additional joint statement Thursday. Club leaders wanted to release it early to ensure that it would be noticed on Valentine?s Day, Trumbach said.

?The Columbia Democrats and Columbia University College Republicans are pleased to endorse marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples,? the statement reads. ?We join with all of the College Democrats and College Republicans chapters of the Ivy League in urging our nation?s leaders to move forward on an issue too important to be held hostage by party politics. Our generation overwhelmingly supports marriage equality, and we look forward to a future of bipartisan cooperation in ensuring equality for all Americans.?

?I think the goal of this is just to let other college Republican chapters across the country know?there are a lot them that do support marriage equality, but they just feel uncomfortable coming out and saying it?that there are resources, there are other chapters that will back them up on this position,? Trumbach said.

He added that the CUCR board voted to approve the statement with over 75 percent in favor, something he said never would have happened when he first joined the club his first year, or even last year.

Recent board changes have given the group ?a new dynamic, a dynamic that?s not afraid of taking these stances,? Trumbach said. ?Looking at our general body, we saw this same openness to accept marriage equality as well.?

Balekdjian said she felt excited about the declaration of support because she sees it as indicative of the larger national discourse.

?I think it?s supposed to be a sort of barometer of young Americans in the national discourse and how we feel about gay marriage and that we support it,? she said.

Tom Callander, CC ?13 and CUCR director of finance, also said he hopes the statement will have implications beyond the immediate Columbia campus.

?We think it?s an important step in showing the campus and people outside the Columbia community that there are a number of issues on which Republicans and Democrats can agree and there are common-sense bipartisan solutions, and we think that is an important lesson that not just people on our campus should learn, but our nation?s leaders as well,? he said.

However, Balekdjian said she believes the statement matters less at Columbia than at other schools with less liberal student bodies.

On the other hand, Trumbach said the statement is important for Columbia?s perception of CUCR.

?It sends the message that we?re not afraid to stand up for important values such as this,? Trumbach said. ?Even Republicans, who are viewed kind of negatively on Columbia?s campus?in reality, we?re part of the community as well, we see these struggles and issues.?

Trumbach called this statement ?one of the most important things this club has ever done? and said he hopes the joint effort will inspire students in other places to ?not be afraid to take stances on controversial issues that are important for our time.?

Austin Peay State University Track and Field headed to Ohio for Buckeye Tune-Up

?

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN ? Austin Peay State University women?s track and field team travels to Columbus, Ohio for its final tune-up before the conference championships at this weekend?s Buckeye Tune-Up, hosted by Ohio State.

The one-day meet begins 5:00pm, Friday, at the French Fieldhouse.

The majority of the Lady Govs got last weekend off in preparation for this final meet before the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships, next weekend.? Senior Chantelle Grey, the only active Lady Gov last weekend, finished 11th in the 800m run at the Spire Invitational to take over first place in the OVC in that event.

?I think the week off really helped a lot of our athletes who were banged up,? said head coach Doug Molnar. ?Hopefully this meet will be a good confidence-builder for us in the run up to the OVC Championships.?

Grey and junior Xiamar Richards (third in the OVC in the 5000m run) lead a strong contingent of Lady Govs seeking a good qualifying position for the conference championships.? In sprints, sophomore Erika Adams ranks eighth in the conference in the 60m dash but is less than a tenth of a second out of fourth place.

Both Austin Peay relay squads reside at the top of the conference rankings.? The 4x400m relay team ranks fourth, just over two seconds behind third-place SIU Edwardsville, while the distance medley team ranks second, more than one second ahead of Eastern Illinois.

In the field,? senior Nicole Bressner sits an inch-and-a-half out of eighth in the conference in the pole vault with a season-best 10? 11.75? mark.? Seniors Cenitra Hudson (sixth) and Lauren Lyles (seventh) rank near the top in the long jump, with Hudson also ranking seventh in the triple jump.

?This meet will be big for us,? Molnar said. ?While it?s a little more low-key than Grey?s field at the Spire Invitational was last week, everybody here is trying to get a better time or mark for their conference championship runs. It?s going to be a tough field.?

SND34 judges pick World's Best-Designed? Newspapers ? The ...

&nbsp

February 13th, 2013

worldbestsnd34final

In the 34th annual The Best of Newspaper Design? Creative Competition, the Society for News Design has named five newspapers, representing four countries, the World?s Best-Designed? Newspaper.

They are:

Dagens Nyheter, Stockholm, Sweden

Die Zeit, Hamburg, Germany

The Grid, Toronto, Canada

Politiken, Copenhagen, Denmark

Welt am Sonntag, Berlin, Germany

In announcing the winners today, the judges released this statement:

What distinguishes a World?s Best-Designed? Newspaper? A culture of careful editing of all content that puts the reader first ? through stringent attention to detail.

Too many designers are not driven by the content in front of them; they?re just moving elements around pages. In the best-designed publications, that connection jumps off the page.

Quite frankly, it was easy to weed out publications in the first round of judging. So many papers couldn?t nail the fundamentals of typography, grid, white space, hierarchy, etc. ? the basics we?ve been talking about for 35 years as a Society.

That?s not to say that there weren?t many excellent entries. Everything that made it past the first round was solid, but it takes more than being solid. It requires diligent and nuanced execution ? and tons of personality.

It?s disheartening to see so many American newspapers that, after decades of discussion and education, still pay little or no attention to inside pages. Publications that spend a great amount of time finessing their covers but treat their inside pages like vessels to fill with commodity news until they?re full to the top are missing the point and the opportunity to be relevant.

Another disturbing trend: the lack of illustration and especially information graphics in so many newspapers. These are the tools that newspapers can use to distinguish their content from the pack and add context and understanding to their report.

Several fascinating innovations popped up such as new micro format papers (Diario DF, Mexico City) and the use of technology like augmented reality to enhance printed pages (Reporte Indigo, Monterrey, Mexico). Many Asian papers are starting to use Western design methods but are still maturing (Qianjiang Evening News, Hangzhou, China). Latin American newspapers burst with energy but some lack focus. In the Middle East, the quality of printing and production is impressive; we look forward to the evolution of their individual personalities.

In the five publications we selected, details elevated them from their peers. In these papers, every page counts. These staffs perform an extra layer of editing to refine and strengthen the final product.

Ultimately, these winning newspapers have been brainstormed, edited and curated for readers. They add analysis and context and serve to connect readers to their larger community.

(AP) ? Soccer player Mario Cizmek thought it would just be one match. Ease up and let the other team win, he told himself, then collect the payoff and start paying off your debts.

But the broke and desperate athlete soon learned that one match wouldn't do it. He would have to throw another game, then another, then another.

And so it went until, in what he described as his "worst moment," he was arrested at his home in front of his two daughters on charges of match-fixing, frantically dialing his wife to take the children because police were hauling him off to jail.

"Twenty years of hard work I destroyed in just one month," he said.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story is part of a six-month, multiformat AP examination of how organized crime is corrupting soccer through match-fixing.

___

The Croatian midfielder was the perfect target for fixers: He was nearing the end of his career, his financially unstable club hadn't paid him a regular salary for 14 months, and he owed money on back taxes and his pension.

Cizmek's story is typical of how the world's most popular sport is increasingly becoming a dirty game ? sullied by criminal gangs like the one that bribed Cizmek, and by corrupt officials or others cashing in on the billion-dollar web of match-fixing.

An examination of Cizmek's case turns up contrasting portraits of the 36-year-old with quick feet and an engaging smile.

One is of a victim ? a player forced into match-fixing by an unscrupulous club and preyed upon by a shadowy former coach convicted of bribery, fraud and conspiracy in a Croatian match-fixing case and banned for life from soccer by FIFA, the world soccer body. That's the picture painted by FIFPro, the global players' union, which has used Cizmek's story to warn players.

Croatian prosecutors, armed with reams of phone calls and text messages from police wiretaps, have a different take. At a match-fixing trial at the County Court of Zagreb, they portrayed Cizmek as the ringleader who got several FC Croatia Sesvete players to throw six games and tried to fix a seventh in spring 2010. The authorities said he organized the players, handed out sealed blue envelopes of euros, and promised that they could stop whenever they wanted.

Cizmek readily admits he delivered the payments but says it was only because his apartment was closest to the fixer. Looking back, he says, he realizes he was manipulated.

"Now I see that he didn't want to be seen handing over the money," he said in an interview with The Associated Press.

___

Cizmek joined FC Zagreb on a junior scholarship, signed at 18, and played there for eight years.

"Those were the best years. All my dreams came true," he said. "I signed a professional contract and was among the better players. They thought highly of me. I was even a captain of this club."

After stints in Israel and Iceland, he returned home to play for FC Croatia Sesvete in the country's second league. In 2008, Cizmek scored the goal that sent his team into the top division. That goal benefited every player on the team and lined the pockets of the club's owner, Zvonko Zubak.

But the team fell on hard times, especially with the European economic downturn.

The entire FC Croatia Sesvete locker room was in an uproar for months, with players trying to make ends meet, Cizmek said. A study by the FIFPro union reported that more than 60 percent of Croatian players do not get paid on time.

"We had no money, and we no longer spoke about training or football, but only about how we were going to survive," Cizmek said.

"Every other day we would ask whether we would be paid, and they would say 'Yes, on Monday.' Then we say, 'OK, on Monday,'" he said. But there would be no pay on Monday ? only a promise to be paid Wednesday ? and then no money that day either.

"It would go on for weeks," Cizmek said, shaking his head.

One man who hung around the players offering advice and sympathy ? and loans to those short on cash ? was Vinko Saka, a former assistant coach for Dinamo Zagreb, the soccer powerhouse that has won Croatia's national title every year since 2006.

Saka was always somewhere around the field or at the bars where the players gathered, Cizmek said.

A flashy figure in his 50s who drove a BMW X6, he promised to introduce young players to the dozens of foreign coaches and clubs he said he knew.

"He was always offering presents," Cizmek said. "I had known Vinko for years. We were kind of friends. He was someone who was related to sports, whom I was seeing at the matches. He coached junior teams."

Midfielder Dario Susak, then 22, testified that Saka suggested he could help him get a contract with a foreign club, then loaned him $2,550 at a high interest rate. Once he owed the money, Susak testified, Saka told him he would have to lose matches.

Unbeknownst to any of them, Croatian police were already running a wiretap on Saka after being tipped off by German investigators.

Croatian prosecutors said Saka bribed up to 10 people on Cizmek's team, and another five tied to either FC Varteks or FC Medimurje.

Saka ended up being convicted of fraud, bribery and conspiracy and going to jail. His lawyer confirmed the plea bargain but wouldn't discuss the case.

___

The deal involving Cizmek came together at Fort Apache, a steakhouse on the truck route between Zagreb, the Croatian capital, and Slovenia. Cizmek and his goalkeeper met there with Saka and two associates on March 25, 2010, to fix a game with FC Zadar two days later, according to players' testimony and police transcripts.

Six players would get $24,220, although the money was not divided equally. One of the unwritten rules of match-fixing is that the goalkeeper gets the biggest share because his statistics suffer the worst blow; defenders get the next-biggest, midfielders get less and strikers often are not even included in the fix.

The result: Zadar won 2-1 as Cizmek, one of the best players, stayed on the bench. After the game, he said, he collected $2,550, bought his kids a bunk bed and stashed the rest away, saving up to pay an overdue tax bill.

Cizmek saw himself as a Robin Hood-sort of figure: stealing money from crooks to put food on the table for his teammates and their families who were being crushed by an unjust system.

The match-fixing train had begun rolling, and it would prove difficult to stop.

The stakes were raised for an April 3 match against FC Slaven Belupo, according to players' testimony. This time it was $51,000 for eight players. They not only had to lose, but to do so by at least three goals. That enabled those in on the deal to win two bets in one match.

Cizmek's team lost 4-0. Saka, however, delivered only $43,300, eight Croatia Sesvete players testified in court. Cizmek said Saka did not explain why.

The demands for an April 14 game against FC Rijeka were even greater: $51,000 to trail at halftime, a final score that included more than three goals, with the team losing by at least two goals, Cizmek testified.

Player Ante Pokrajcic testified that he was happy to have scored a goal until the team's owner stormed into the locker room, cursing about the 1-1 halftime score. Only then did Pokrajcic realize the game had been fixed.

The team lost 4-2, but Saka delivered only about half of what was promised, according to players' testimony.

The players were furious. In the next game, they won 3-1 against Inter Zapresic.

But another unwritten rule of match-fixing soon became clear to Cizmek: Once a player has fixed a game, he is trapped forever.

The criminal gang usually has enough evidence to get a player thrown out of the sport for life. Plus, the shame alone will keep him silent, and the fixer's demands will keep escalating until the player quits, retires or gets caught. Some implicated in match-fixing have even committed suicide.

When Cizmek approached the goalkeeper and a midfielder about fixing an April 17 game against FC Lokomotiva, they refused. He handed the money back to Saka two hours before the game, he said.

"If I was really the ringleader, I could have made them do it," he told the AP. "But I couldn't do it. ... We told them, 'No more.'"

Saka exploded in anger but made sure not to bet, Cizmek said. FC Lokomotiva won 2-1 anyway, and Cizmek said he scored a goal "just for pride" in the second half.

For the last three games of the season, Saka went above the players' heads to fix the game, according to players' testimony. Those involved now included the coach and one of the owner's sons ? both of whom were convicted in the case.

"Saka came to me and said, 'I have arranged everything higher up. If you want you can check with the son,'" Cizmek said.

Cizmek said he refused to deliver that message to the other players, making the son talk individually with each athlete. Other players confirmed his account in court. Cizmek said the fixer made sure not to involve the owner's other son, a young player on the team.

With substantial bribes now going to the coach, the payouts for the players grew meager: $22,300 for seven players in the last game, according to testimony.

Overall, Cizmek earned $26,130 from match-fixing, not as much as goalkeeper Ivan Banovic ($37,600), defender Jasmin Agic ($35,000) or coach Goran Jerkovic ($33,000), according to the findings of the court in its sentencing document.

___

The season ended in early May but police did not come knocking until June 8.

Cizmek was arrested at his home and taken to Zagreb's Remetinec jail, where he stayed until July 15. His wife handed police the $20,000 he had been saving for his tax bill. The bunk beds were all he had to show for his money.

He went on trial for match-fixing with 14 others.

With the wiretaps, prosecutors had a very strong case. Cizmek made a full confession, pleaded guilty and gave testimony to the players' union against match-fixing. But he and the coach still got the longest sentence ? 10 months.

The goalkeeper, the owner's son and three others were given nine months; two players got eight months; and the youngest member of the team, a 20-year-old midfielder, got a seven-month suspended sentence.

They are now free, awaiting the result of their appeal.

Saka cut a plea bargain with prosecutors in which he was convicted of fraud, bribery and conspiracy to commit a crime against the public order and sentenced to one year in prison. The Zagreb court ordered him to pay back $58,800 of the $844,000 it estimated his fixing operation made in Croatia.

Saka served his time in jail and then went to Italy to be questioned in a match-fixing investigation there. His lawyer in Italy, Kresimir Krsnik, said prosecutors have six months to decide whether to press charges.

"Saka will answer any call from the court. He has given his statement there and returned home," Krsnik told the AP.

Saka is back living in an affluent Zagreb neighborhood, driving around in his BMW.

___

Cizmek is trying hard not to be bitter.

Chain-smoking Marlboros at a Zagreb coffee bar, he dreads going back to jail.

"I was in there already, with murderers and rapists and drug addicts," he said. "It was a scary place."

He is angry that Saka got a much better plea deal than the players and doesn't hold out hope for his appeal, which is pending.

He says his club still owes him salary but went bankrupt in 2012 and dissolved.

He works on his family's organic farm, peddling jams and berry tea at farmers' markets, but is just scraping by. In one of his last interviews with the AP, Cizmek mentioned his recent divorce, and worry lines around his eyes seemed deeper.

He mourns for his lost soccer career and doesn't know what he will do with the rest of his life.

"I should have just taken my football shoes and hung them on the wall and said: 'Thank you, guys' and gone on to do something else," Cizmek said.

Still, he knows what he did was wrong.

"Everything I lost is my fault. I need to take the responsibility. I don't blame anyone, not even Saka," he said. "No one made me do this."

He cited an old Balkan expression: "The one who confesses, half their sins will be forgiven."

"I have opened my soul to you," he said. "I hope it will pay me back in karma for being so honest."

Eagle's Semanko resigns as council president

by KTVB.COM

KTVB.COM

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:10 AM

EAGLE -- Eagle City Council President Norm Semanko announced his resignation Tuesday night, citing "the increasing demands" of his personal and professional life.

The resignation is effective March 15, 2013. Councilwoman Mary Defayette was elected to take his place.

Semanko is the Executive Director of the Idaho Water User's Council, serves on several Eagle City boards, and is widely recognized in state politics.

Semanko recently served as chairman of the Idaho Republican Party, where he supported the controversial decision to close Idaho's Republican Primary in 2012.

He subsequently ran for Eagle Mayor in 2012, but lost the race to incumbent Jim Reynolds.

Semanko's ties to the water user's council made headlines in 2011 on the heels of a $161,000 loan he accepted from the quasi-governmental entity -- a controversial, but legal, practice.

In a letter to?the mayor, city council, and others, Semanko outlined his reasoning for giving up the post:

Mayor, fellow Council members, residents of Eagle, City staff and friends,

With the recent death of my father and the increasing demands of my personal and professional life, my priorities have necessarily changed. I apologize for missing the State of the City address today; the first time that I have missed that as a Council member.

As a result of these changed priorities and the demands on my time, my wife and I agreed this past weekend that I will step down as President of the Eagle City Council, effective immediately. Since that office should not remain unoccupied, I plan to make a motion to add the election of a new City Council President to tonight's meeting agenda.

In addition, I hereby resign as a member of the Eagle City Council, effective at the close of business on Friday, March 15. Therefore, barring a special meeting, the March 12 Council meeting will be my last. I wish the Mayor and Council members well in the process of selecting a replacement to fill my seat until the November election. I do hope it will be a collaborative process.

Of course, my resignation will also end my tenure with the Urban Renewal Agency and the Community Infrastructure District boards. Again, barring a special meeting, I will attend one more of each of those board meetings before March 15.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of Eagle since my appointment to the City Council on January 8, 2008 and my subsequent election in November, 2009. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have given something back to the community through public service. As former Interior Secretary Franklin Knight Lane said, "A public office is not a job, it is an opportunity to do something for the public." I hope that I have done some measure of good while occupying the office.

I wish each of you and our city well.

Regards,

Norm Semanko

Long distance lovin': Valentine's Day in a LDR ? BlogDailyHerald ...

Love through cyberspace and time.

Love is in the (virtual) air

I think we can all agree that Valentine?s Day is?usually much more?depressing than it is enjoyable. When you?re a kid, you?re sad because that girl with the blonde hair and 10 Tamagotchis got more cards with Spongebob or puppies on them than you. As an adult, you?re in a relationship and experiencing some sort of a crisis about whether or not you should be together. It goes something like this:

  • Does he really not believe in commercial holidays or does he not respect me enough to celebrate with me? And do I really want to date the pretentious cheapskate who doesn?t believe in commercial holidays?

Or like this:

  • Does he really think that a V-Dub cupcake is a substantial gift?

Or you?re horribly, horribly alone.

Maybe that?s just me. But it?s universally acknowledged that February 14th can lead to pretty?nasty feelings. Perhaps one of the worst situations to be in on Valentine?s Day is in a long-distance relationship. LDRs are tragically common among college-goers and if you, like many, will not be with your significant other this Hallmark holiday season, never fear! Blog is here to give you some suggestions on how to make this Valentine?s Day less lonely:

  1. Giving and receiving:?Though USPS has cut down on its delivery services, it will still be able to get your?significant other?a gift by Valentine?s Day if you hurry. Be it a homemade gift or card, an Edible Arrangement, a thoughtful (last-minute) purchase from her Amazon wishlist, or?a weird seed that blossoms into a plant that reads ?I Love You?, people love to get a physical token of affection. The sappier the gift the better, because for some reason LDRs tend to err on the side of sickeningly cute. When the physical relationship goes out the window, it seems like you need to rely on a lot of romance to keep that sucker alive. [Just as a side note, if anyone wants to send me-or anyone with a soul and taste buds-a gift, a lot of these places deliver.]
  2. Dinner and a movie:?This classic standard will likely be a popular one for same-location couples, but you?ll have to make a few adjustments. Both of you should go to your favorite take-out?restaurant and bring?food back to your place. Then set up a laptop with Skype and a great?movie to watch simultaneously. This is pretty much the oldest LDR trick in the book. You could probably spice it up, by watching a?movie together, but either way, make sure you have some privacy. Your roommate probably doesn?t want to be subject to any of this.
  3. Virtual dating: Since the early 2000s, people have been hanging out in internet chat rooms and?virtual worlds (against our mother?s wishes.) Plenty of 14-year-olds met their significant others over Neopets-?and you can have an internet boyfriend too! Join World of Warcraft together and help your sweetheart deliver the Manual of Engineering Disciplines to Tinkermaster Overforge to learn more about Gnome Engineering. Fight some Blood Elves together. WoW even has an annual event called ?Love is in the Air? to help you get in the romantic spirit. If you?re not into all things fantasy, there?s a more modern virtual reality called Second Life, which, while considered somewhat creepy in mainstream media, fits the bill. Note: getting in-universe virtual naughty bits to play with when the date is over can be pricey.
  4. Apps are for lovers:?Most of us are already in relationships with our phones, but this Thursday, you can use your over-developed Words With Friends skills to impress your girlfriend. Sit down with a blanket and a yule log video in the background and pretend you and your love are playing?Scrabble by the fire. Super romantic. There are plenty of other apps designed specifically for long-distance couples, so feel free to check those out.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your Valentine?s Day this year and try not to put too much pressure on it. Because, seriously, it?s probably going to suck anyway.

Sterne to swerve Africa Open

Richard Sterne: Opted against trying for African double

Richard Sterne: Opted against trying for African double

Richard Sterne has withdrawn from this week's Africa Open after qualifying for the first World Golf Championship event of the year.

The South African's dominant seven-shot victory at the Joburg Open propelled him to 56th in the latest world rankings, earning him a place in the 64-man field for next week's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

The 31-year-old, whose win in Johannesburg was his first since 2009, is now taking a week off to prepare for his first visit to Dove Mountain in Arizona for four seasons.

Sterne was languishing at 165th in the world rankings only two weeks ago, but he posted top-10 finishes at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic prior to his victory on Sunday.

He becomes the seventh South African to qualify for the Match Play after Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Ernie Els, Branden Grace, George Coetzee and Tim Clark.

Oosthuizen is also missing this week's European Tour event in East London despite lifting the title for the past two seasons.

Joyful Public Speaking (from fear to joy): How Americans ...

Back in 1999 the National Communication Association published a report titled How Americans Communicate that was based on a telephone survey of 1001 people done by Roper Starch Worldwide in the summer of 1998. The original used to be on their web site, but if I recall correctly it was just for members. There are lots of references to tidbits from it in books. For example, in David Dempsey?s Present Your Way to the Top, on page 3 he says that:

?A 1999 study commissioned by the National Communication Association found that only 24 percent of Americans are very comfortable giving a speech or a format presentation.?

How about the rest of us? Would perhaps 17 percent have been not comfortable at all? You can find the whole report online here at a university web site. The survey was done on a sample of? 1001 people over age 18. 52% were female and 48% were male.

Some questions of interest and results shown on page 20 were:

?For each type of communication that I read to you, please tell me whether you feel very comfortable, somewhat comfortable, not too comfortable, or not at all comfortable communicating that way:

261. On the telephone
262. Via the Internet/by email
263. Face-to-face/in-person
264. In writing
265. Speaking up at a meeting
266. Giving a presentation or a speech"

A bar chart shows all four percentages for giving a presentation or a speech. (Click on it to see a larger, clearer version) 24% (about a quarter) were very comfortable, 34% (about a third) were somewhat comfortable, 22% (about another quarter) were not too comfortable, and 17% (about one-sixth) were not at all comfortable.??

A second bar chart shows the percentages who were very comfortable for all six situations. Mr. Dempsey only quoted the 24% for giving a presentation or a speech, although even fewer people (22%) were comfortable communicating via the Internet. Back then email was pretty scary! A similar bar chart appears on page 6 of the NCA? report.

Yet another bar chart shows the percentages who were terrified (not at all comfortable). Giving a presentation or speech terrified 17%, followed by a tie (9%) for speaking at a meeting and email. This chart is what you should use if you want to alarm people, like some speaking coaches.

We also can group two categories and show the percentages who were anxious (not at all comfortable or not too comfortable). 39% (two out of five) were anxious about giving a presentation or speech, followed by 26% (about a quarter) for speaking up at a meeting, and 17% (about one-sixth) for email.??

Similarly, we can group the other two categories and show the percentages who were relaxed (very comfortable or somewhat comfortable). 58% (almost three out of five) were relaxed about giving a presentation or a speech, and 70% (seven of ten) were relaxed about speaking up at a meeting.?

There are many more topics covered in the report, and it?s still worth reading.

Police: 4 wounded in Bourbon Street shooting

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? New Orleans police have released a bystanders' video of what they say is an argument involving some people in a Bourbon Street crowd celebrating ahead of Mardi Gras when shots ring out, followed by screams.

Police spokesman Frank B. Robertson says the shooting in the crowded French Quarter just days before Fat Tuesday left four people wounded, including a male victim shot in the abdomen, thigh and pelvic area. He says two other male victims also were wounded and one female.

The footage showed many partying in costumes before what police described as an argument between the most seriously injured male and two other men. Four rapid shots are heard, then screams.

Authorities have not said if they have made any arrests, saying they sought the public's help.

LAPD to reopen probe into fugitive ex-cop's firing

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) ? The hunt for a former Los Angeles police officer suspected in three killings continued in snow-covered mountains Saturday as the LAPD's chief said he would reopen the disciplinary case that led to the fugitive's firing and new details emerged of the evidence he left behind.

Officials will re-examine the allegations by Christopher Dorner, 33, that his law enforcement career was undone by racist colleagues, Police Chief Charlie Beck said. While he promised to hear out Dorner if he surrenders, Beck stressed that he was ordering a review of his 2007 case because he takes the allegation of racism in his department seriously.

"I do this not to appease a murderer. I do it to reassure the public that their police department is transparent and fair in all the things we do," the chief said in a statement.

Authorities suspect Dorner in a series of attacks in Southern California over the past week that left three people dead, including a police officer. Authorities say he has vowed revenge against several former LAPD colleagues whom he blames for ending his career. The killings and threats that Dorner allegedly made in an online rant have led police to provide protection to 50 families, Beck said.

A captain who was named a target in the manifesto posted on Facebook told the Orange County Register he has not stepped outside his house since he learned of the threat, and he was taking it seriously.

"From what I've seen of (Dorner's) actions, he feels he can make allegations for injustice and justify killing people and that's not reasonable," said Capt. Phil Tingirides, who chaired a board that stripped Dorner of his badge. "The end never justifies the means."

Saturday was the third full day of a massive multi-agency hunt for Dorner in the San Bernardino mountains, about 80 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, where Dorner's burned-out pickup truck was discovered Thursday. A scaled-back search party took advantage of a break from stormy weather to search for Dorner using heat-sensing helicopters as vacationing families and weekend skiers frolicked nearby.

A law enforcement officer told The Associated Press authorities found weapons in the truck. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe is ongoing.

Investigators have been examining the truck to determine if it broke down or was set ablaze as a diversion. Police say the truck had a broken axle. Investigators are trying to determine whether it was already broken when they found it, or whether it was damaged when it was towed away.

Newly released surveillance video showed Dorner tossing several items into a Dumpster behind an auto parts store in National City on Monday. The store's manager told FOX5 in San Diego that an employee found a magazine full of bullets, a military belt and a military helmet. Majid Yahyai said he and the employee took the items across the street to a police station.

On Friday night, authorities served a search warrant and collected evidence from a Buena Park storage unit as part of their investigation. Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen wouldn't elaborate on the nature of the evidence or say who had rented the unit.

Earlier Friday, another warrant was served at a La Palma house belonging to Dorner's mother. Officers collected 10 bags of evidence, including five electronic items.

In his online manifesto, Dorner vowed to use "every bit of small arms training, demolition, ordnance and survival training I've been given" to bring "warfare" to the LAPD and its families.

Dorner served in the Navy, earning a rifle marksman ribbon and a pistol expert medal. He was assigned to a naval undersea warfare unit and various aviation training units, according to military records. He took leave from the LAPD for a six-month deployment to Bahrain in 2006 and 2007.

The flight training that he received in the Navy prompted the Transportation Security Administration to issue an alert on Friday, warning the general aviation community to be on the lookout for Dorner. The extent of his potential flying skills wasn't known, the bulletin said.

Last Friday was his last day with the Navy and also the day CNN's Anderson Cooper received a package that contained a note on it that read, in part, "I never lied." A coin riddled with bullet holes that former Chief William Bratton gave out as a souvenir was also in the package.

Police said it was a sign of planning by Dorner before the killing began.

On Feb. 3, police say Dorner shot and killed a couple in a parking garage at their condominium in Irvine. The woman was the daughter of a retired police captain who had represented Dorner in the disciplinary proceedings that led to his firing.

Dorner wrote in his manifesto that he believed the retired captain had represented the interests of the department over his.

Hours after authorities identified Dorner as a suspect in the double murder, police believe Dorner shot and grazed an LAPD officer in Corona and then used a rifle to ambush two Riverside police officers early Thursday, killing one and seriously wounding the other.

The crime spree spanned across a wide swath of Southern California, prompting several police agencies, including the FBI and US Marshall Service, to form a joint investigative task force on Saturday.

Universal Plans New Grinch Movie

Posted 11:30 AM February 8th, 2013 by Binh Ngo

The next time the Grinch appears on the big screen, he won't look like Jim Carrey covered in green makeup. That's because Universal, through its animation arm Illumination, is planning to bring Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! back as an animated feature, Variety reports.

Veteran animator Pete Candeland will make his directorial debut with this feature, which sources say will be faithful to the source material. The plan is to put the contrast between Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch's outlook in life as the heart of the story.

No release date is set but the movie is expected to come out in 2016, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1966 TV adaptation of Dr. Seuss' book.

The movie is currently looking for a writer.

Universal's previous Dr. Seuss adaptation The Lorax, while wasn't a favorite with the critics, made over $348 million at the global box office.

6 dead in rocket attack on Iraqi refugee camp

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Rockets and mortar rounds struck a refugee camp for Iranian exiles next to Baghdad's international airport before dawn Saturday, killing six people and wounding about 40, police and U.N. officials said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack. He urged Iraqi officials to investigate and bring the attackers to justice, noting that the government is responsible for the safety of the camp residents.

The government said it launched an investigation, but that there was little it can do to shield the camp, which is home to about 3,100 people, from rocket attacks. It asked the international community to speed up the resettlement of the refugees.

The camp houses members of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, or MEK, the militant wing of a Paris-based Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran. Iraq's Shiite-led pro-Iranian government considers MEK a terrorist group and is eager to have it out of the country.

The refugee camp, located in a former American military base known as Camp Liberty, is meant to be a temporary way station while the United Nations works to find host countries for the refugees. They are unlikely to return to Iran because of their opposition to the regime.

Camp spokesman Shahriar Kia said 35 rockets and mortar rounds struck the camp. He said more than 100 people were hurt, while the U.N. and police put the number of wounded at about 40.

The Iranian opposition group provided amateur video and photos it said showed the aftermath of the attack. One photo showed five bodies swaddled in blankets lying on the ground in a hallway.

A video clip showed people who were wounded, some with blood-covered faces, being treated at a small clinic. Other footage said to be from the camp showed several small craters in the ground, presumably from rockets, as well as shattered windows and shredded walls of trailer homes.

Two police officials confirmed that six people were killed in Saturday's attack and said more than 40 were hurt, including three Iraqi policemen. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to share information with the media.

Kia, the camp spokesman, alleged that Iraqi authorities refused to let the wounded be taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Moussawi denied the claim.

The U.N. envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, said about 40 people who were wounded were taken to hospitals shortly after the attack. Kobler said five people died at the camp and that a sixth apparently died later in a hospital.

Before being moved to the Baghdad area camp, members of the MEK lived in another camp, called Ashraf, in northeastern Iraq. Camp Ashraf was twice raided by Iraqi security forces trying to impose control, leaving more than three dozen people dead.

Iraq's government says MEK members are living in Iraq illegally.

"We call on the international community to expedite the procedures ... to find countries for them as quickly as possible," al-Moussawi, the government spokesman, said Saturday.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Ant?nio Guterres, condemned the attack and noted that camp residents were asylum seekers requesting refugee status and are entitled to international protection.

Kobler told The Associated Press that about half the camp residents have been cleared for resettlement in principle, and that he believes the first group can leave soon.

The MEK, which is also called the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, opposes Iran's clerical regime and has carried out assassinations and bombings in Iran. It fought in the 1980s alongside Saddam Hussein's forces in the Iran-Iraq war, and several thousand of its members were given sanctuary in Iraq by Saddam.

The group renounced violence in 2001 and the Obama administration took the MEK off the U.S. terrorism list in late September.
