Sources: Review finds no proof that firm spied for China

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A White House-ordered review of security risks posed by suppliers to U.S. telecommunications companies found no clear evidence that Huawei Technologies Ltd had spied for China, two people familiar with the probe told Reuters.

Instead, those leading the 18-month review concluded early this year that relying on Huawei, the world's second-largest maker of networking gear, was risky for other reasons, such as the presence of vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit.

These previously unreported findings support parts of a landmark U.S. congressional report last week that warned against allowing Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE Corp to supply critical telecom infrastructure.

But they may douse speculation that Huawei has been caught spying for China.

Some questions remain unanswered. For example, it is unclear if security vulnerabilities found in Huawei equipment were placed there deliberately. It is also not clear whether any critical new intelligence emerged after the inquiry ended.

"The White House has not conducted any classified inquiry that resulted in clearing any telecom equipment supplier," White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. She also noted that Huawei had been barred from participating in an emergency network for first responders a year ago "due to U.S. government national security concerns".

At the White House's direction, according to people familiar with the matter, intelligence agencies and other departments conducted the largely classified inquiry, delving into reports of suspicious activity and asking detailed questions of nearly 1,000 telecom equipment buyers.

"We knew certain parts of government really wanted" evidence of active spying, said one of the people, who requested anonymity. "We would have found it if it were there."

A spokesman for Huawei said the company was not familiar with the review but it was not surprised that no evidence of Huawei espionage was found.

Last week's report from the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Intelligence Committee noted the potential for spying through Huawei gear installed to manage traffic on wireless networks. The committee also criticized Huawei's leadership for failing to provide details about its relationships with Chinese government agencies.

Huawei, whose chief executive officer, Ren Zhengfei, founded it 25 years ago after he was laid off by the Chinese army, has rejected the House report as unfair and inaccurate. China's Commerce Ministry has also called the accusations "groundless".

"Huawei is a $32 billion independent multinational that would not jeopardize its success or the integrity of its customers' networks for any government or third party. Ever," the company's U.S. spokesman, Bill Plummer, said on Wednesday.

ZTE said it had never encountered an instance of its equipment causing security problems in the countries in which it operates.

"We believe our equipment is safe," said spokesman David Dai Shu. "ZTE recognizes and fully respects the obligation to protect national security of all countries in which ZTE's equipments are deployed."

The House Intelligence Committee's report did not present concrete evidence that either Huawei or ZTE has stolen U.S. data, although it said a classified annex provided "significantly more information adding to the committee's concerns" about the risk to the United States.

Speculation has swirled about the contents of the secret annex, and both committee Chairman Mike Rogers and some intelligence officials have hinted at evidence that Huawei has participated in espionage.

Rogers, the report's lead author, stoked concerns by saying some customers had seen routers sending off "very valuable data" to China.

But in the one case a committee staff member pointed out to Reuters, the victim - Leap Wireless International Inc - said that while some of its computers were infected with viruses earlier this year, an investigation found no evidence that the infection was deliberate or that confidential data had been stolen.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Pressed about why the White House review and unclassified version of the House Intelligence Committee report had not turned up a "smoking gun", two officials familiar with intelligence assessments said U.S. agencies were most concerned about the capability for future spying or sabotage.

Similarly, Chris Johnson, a former CIA analyst on China, said he had been told that the White House review had come up empty on past malicious acts. Nonetheless, officials emerged from the review with "a general sense of foreboding" about what would happen if China asked Huawei for assistance in gathering intelligence from U.S. customers, he said.

"If the Chinese government approached them, why would they say no, given their system?" Johnson said.

Preventing state spying through technology is a high priority for U.S. President Barack Obama's administration, which is lobbying for legislation to raise private-sector security standards and readying a more limited executive order along those lines.

Reuters interviews with more than a dozen current and former U.S. government officials and contractors found nearly unanimous agreement that Huawei's equipment poses risks: The company could send software updates that siphon off vast amounts of communications data or shut them down in times of conflict.

More than anything else, cyber experts complained about what they said was poor programming that left Huawei equipment more open than that of rivals to hacking by government agents or third parties.

"We found it riddled with holes," said one of the people familiar with the White House review.

At a conference in Kuala Lumpur last week, Felix Lindner, a leading expert in network equipment security, said he had discovered multiple vulnerabilities in Huawei's routers.

"I'd say it was five times easier to find one in a Huawei router than in a Cisco one," Lindner said.

Lindner, who spent months investigating Huawei code, said the vulnerabilities appeared to be the result of sloppy coding and poor procedures, rather than any deliberate attempt at espionage. Huawei is looking into his findings, he said.

Some in the U.S. government, however, have said the alleged poor security practices at Huawei could be a deliberate cover for future attacks.

One computer scientist, who helped conduct classified U.S. government research on Huawei routers and switches four to six years ago, told Reuters that he had found "back doors" that his team believed were inserted with care.

He said these back doors could enable attackers to install malicious software that would make critical government networks inoperable, allow hackers to gain entry into highly classified systems and enable them to spy on all traffic. He requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the research.

Huawei has denied the existence of these back doors. Plummer also noted that any vendor's gear could be targeted by hackers, and the company would address any vulnerabilities it finds.

The United States' closest allies have rendered a split verdict on Huawei. Earlier this year, Australia barred Huawei from becoming a contractor on the country's National Broadband Network, and Canada said last week that Huawei could not bid to help build a secure national network. In Britain, however, a spokesman for the Cabinet Office said Huawei's products were fully vetted and did not represent a security concern.

Dutch Ruppersberger, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee and co-author of the report, told Reuters that the burden of proof had been on Huawei and ZTE, which cited Chinese government restrictions in limiting their responses.

"China has the means, opportunity, and motive to use telecommunications companies for malicious purposes," Ruppersberger said.

Republican Rogers' staff did not respond to questions about the contents of the classified annex or the White House review.

DISTORTED HARMONY Utopia music review by J-Man

5 stars People have argued about how the internet affects the music industry for well over a decade now, and although I'm sure these debates will persist for decades more, there is one clear way in which music benefits from the world wide web - distribution. Take Distorted Harmony, for example; a group of virtuous progressive metal musicians from Israel that has had the opportunity to share their art with the world through the means of online distribution. Released in May, 2012 for free on their SoundCloud page, Utopia is the sort of album that I'd expect from established progressive metal veterans - stunning compositions, incredibly high levels of musicianship, and flawless execution make this one of the best albums I've heard this year. Much like Haken did just a couple of years ago with the masterpiece that was Aquarius, Distorted Harmony have entered the scene with a stunning observation that deserves to be heard by every fan of the genre.

Though Utopia's finest asset is in its strikingly dynamic compositions, one of Distorted Harmony's greatest strengths is their ability to stay within the confines of 'traditional' progressive metal while still coming across as fresh and unique. The strong vocal melodies, frequent use of polyrhythmic syncopation, and symphonic tendencies bring Pain of Salvation to mind, and the technical acrobatics will probably remind most listeners of Dream Theater - while this may not sound like too unique of a formula, heavy and modern sounding riffs, frequent deviations into traditional symphonic prog, and alternative-sounding melodies add an additional layer of freshness to Distorted Harmony's core sound. Whilst one could potentially argue that Utopia does sound stylistically similar to many other observations in the genre, Distorted Harmony has put a stamp on the album that is distinctly theirs. And, at the end of the day, what really matters most is the music - and that is where Distorted Harmony makes one hell of an impression.

Utopia consists of six songs, clocking anywhere from seven to twelve-and-a-half minutes apiece, and although the tracks are certainly on the 'longer' side, Distorted Harmony does not indulge in any drawn-out shredfests or sprawling epics. The band focuses much more on powerful, compact compositions, which I think suits them very well. Utopia doesn't have a weak moment in sight; every section is captivating, every transition is smooth, and every song leaves an impression that will last for quite some time even after the listener has given the album a rest. Everything from the grandiose orchestrations in 'Kono Yume' to the climatic ending in 'Utopia' just reeks of sheer perfection, and even after enjoying the album for nearly half a year, I'm still nowhere near finished with this slice of heaven.

For better or worse, Utopia is the sort of release that only comes around once in a blue moon - albums this perfect just don't roll around frequently enough, especially for debut offerings. Utopia is just one of those releases that always manages to challenge my mind, pull my heartstrings, and lift my mood regardless of the circumstances - even after hearing this dozens of time, I'm still shocked by some of the intricacies used by Distorted Harmony. It will take a damn good album to dethrone this one from 'album of the year' for me, and even if that were to happen, Utopia will still stand as one of the best progressive metal albums I have ever heard. Well done, gentlemen!

Syria's wealthy businesses feel civil war squeeze

CAIRO (AP) ? Syria's wealthy, long cultivated by President Bashar Assad as a support for his regime, are seeing their businesses pummeled by the bloody civil war. Factories have been burned down or damaged in fighting. International sanctions restrict their finances. Some warn that their companies are in danger of going under, worsening the country's buckling economy.

Assad may not have lost the backing of Syria's business elite, but some are losing faith. Many of those who can have fled abroad, hoping to ride out the turmoil, which is now in its 19th month and is only getting worse as rebels and regime forces tear apart the country in their fight for power.

Several businessmen interviewed by The Associated Press say resentment is growing against Assad over the crisis ? but they also aren't throwing their lot in with the rebellion. They are hunkering down, trying to salvage their companies.

One young businessman said his family factory in the suburbs of Damascus was damaged Wednesday, with windows blown out and part of the ceiling was destroyed when warplanes hit rebels in a neighboring building. Its several hundred employees had to hide in the basement until fighting eased enough that they could be bused out to safety.

"I feel that they are both just as bad as each other," he said of the rebels and the government. "I could have died today because they (the rebels) were across the street from us and they (the planes) could have bombed us."

Syria's economy has been heavily hurt by the conflict, which activists say has left more than 30,000 dead. Inflation has risen to at least 36 percent. The currency has dropped around 50 percent, now trading at 75 pounds to the dollar on the black market, according to the factory owner. The government estimates economic losses at $34 billion ? almost half the gross domestic product ? though the opposition puts the losses at nearly three times that amount. Fuel shortages have become widespread as the regime burns through hard currency to import diesel and oil at the same time that it finances the war effort.

Though the economic blow has been hard, "we are not at the stage that the rug has been pulled from under the regime," said Anthony Skinner, head of Middle East and North African division at Maplecroft political risk consultancy.

Assad has so far been able to keep his head above water with financial support from top ally Iran, he noted.

"The question is whether this is sustainable in the longer term and I don't think it is," Skinner said. "What Assad is counting on at present is a bare-bones economy that is able to fuel his armed forces."

The businessmen interviewed by AP spoke on condition they remain anonymous and that some identifying details of their industries not be specified for fear of repercussions for talking about the situation in Syria.

They all come from the country's Sunni Muslim elite, which Assad ensured prospered as he carried out free market reforms over the past decade. The reforms transformed the long isolated nation, bringing in foreign businesses and chains and greater consumer goods, though it also sharply increased the gap between rich and poor. While the rebellion has largely been fueled by the Sunni majority, the elite have stuck by Assad for most of the conflict.

The businessmen say they are caught in the middle ? both of the fighting and of Western sanctions they say hurt them more than the regime itself. The civil war has made it difficult to distribute goods since roads are cut off, warehouses have been shut down and 24-hour operations have been slashed to eight hours in places where it is too risky for employees to travel at night. Numerous factories have had to close or reduce production. A pharmaceutical company in Aleppo was also recently burned down in the city's fighting, said a businessman with close ties to the owners.

The owner of a plastics factory said his wife and children fled to London three months ago when the worst fighting yet hit the capital Damascus. Initially, he stayed behind but eventually followed them to London.

He knows others who have left and now have little access to their local accounts and are unable to operate their businesses. That has fueled resentment of Assad, he said. Still, there is also a fear of what may happen to Syria if his regime collapses.

"We feel this is a war by proxy," he said, referring to the influence of Shiite Iran, Russia and China backing Assad and Sunni Gulf states, France and the United States behind the opposition.

If businesses fail, he warned, the new unemployed could further fuel the conflict. Already, 12 of his employees quit to work as "security" for the government.

"I know what that means. They are Shabiha," he said, referring to the pro-Assad gunmen used in fighting against rebels and accused of killings of civilians. He said he paid the employees $200 a month, but the government pays Shabiha at least $300. "If I stop paying salaries to 400 people they will make a choice," he said.

A physician who is among 14 owners of a hospital in Syria said only seven of his partners remain in the country. He is now in London while his wife and child are in California. He says most of his friends have also gone abroad.

"Nobody is happy. I am seeking opportunities around the world. I'm homeless now with no hospital, no income," he said.

The civil war means patients do not have the money to pay for needed surgeries and those traveling from outside Damascus are unable to reach the capital because roads are unsafe. Locally-made drugs are difficult to find due to shortages or distribution problems. Importing high-end machines and spare parts is difficult because even if selling the technology is not necessarily banned by sanctions, banks are reluctant to finance the purchases. He also cannot wire his money in Syria to the U.S., he said.

He makes clear his unhappiness with Assad. "By the first speech of his excellency I knew he was an idiot," he said, referring to an Assad speech to parliament after protests broke out last year in which he took a tough line against the dissent. "If this is his way of thinking, I knew things would get worse."

The United States and its European partners have stepped up sanctions already in place before the uprising began in March 2011.

Among the most damaging is the European Union's halt on importing Syrian crude oil, which has cost the country billions of dollars. The EU has also banned its member-states from exporting to Syria weapons, dual-use equipment, luxury goods such as vehicles and jewelry. It froze the assets of the Syrian central bank within the EU, as well as those of more than 50 other Syrian entities and more than 150 people.

It also bars EU banks from establishing new joint ventures or correspondent banking relationships with Syrian banks, and while "legitimate trade" can continue, it is under "strict conditions."

The U.S. has also frozen assets of the Syrian government and a list of people and entities linked to the regime. It has banned Syrian oil imports and bars U.S. citizens from investing in Syria and exporting any services or supplies to Syria. Arab nations, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia also have separate sets of restrictions for doing business with Syria.

The sanctions also have an indirect effect. European and other banks are reluctant to deal with Syrian businesses for fear of running afoul of sanctions. Transfers from Syrian banks ? particularly in dollars ? are difficult and sometimes impossible.

"Most of the banks we deal with say we do not want to do business in Syria," said the plastics factory owner. He said his company's cash flow is under strain. A customer in Italy, for example, could not send him a payment because the European bank banned the transfer.

The businessman whose factory was damaged Wednesday said a European bank also refused to back his purchase of spare parts from China. So he had to pull cash from his accounts in Lebanon and Turkey. Many have had to rely on relatives with foreign passports to open overseas accounts.

"People are either changing dollars into euros or putting it in bags smuggled across the border," he added. "It's just pushing people's buttons. No sanctions have ever hurt any government."

Technology takes a toll on relationships

Texting, Facebook, Twitter and mobile phones have dramatically affected the way students communicate with each other and maintain relationships.

New technology and how it affects relationships and friendships was the focus of the iRelationships workshop, presented Wednesday by the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

Valeries Manchala, Ph.D., and Ya-Shu Liang, Ph.D., both licensed psychologists at the Student Health and Counseling Center at Cal State Fullerton, created the workshop because they noticed how a growing number of clients with relationship problems regularly texted or used Facebook.

Manchala said they wanted to have an open discussion with students about what they thought about technology and its effect on their relationships.

?As we talk about what?s going on for them (clients) there is always this theme around technology whether it is texting or Facebook,? said Manchala. ?I don?t see how that doesn?t play a role in interpersonal struggles.?

According to CAPS, college students send about 100 texts a day, have 128 contacts in their cell phones and check social networking sites at least five times a day.

Liang said there is also a positive correlation between the amount of Facebook friends a person has and the amount of text messages and calling that person does.

?If you have a longer list of friends then you are more likely to text or call because of the more people you have to maintain a relationship with,? said Liang.

Liang said using texts to help maintain a close relationship with someone is not necessarily a bad thing. Texting is an important way to maintain a relationship and can make people more dependable in a friendship.

However, she said it can also lead to greater ?maintenance expectations,? like expecting a fast response from a text, which can increase over-dependence and can lead to decreased satisfaction in a relationship.

Jen Friel, creator of the blog Talk Nerdy to Me Lover, said technology dramatically changes the way relationships work.

?The amount of connectivity has never been greater,? said Friel. ?No longer do we have to go to the bar to meet new people, instead we can just do it online.?

Friel said that even though technology brings us together in new ways, people should still make time to meet in person to establish a stronger relationship.

While technology gives us new ways to meet people, Liang said research revealed that online dating is no more effective than meeting someone in a bar.

One of the reasons, she said, is because when talking to someone online one can have high expectations for how the person acts in person, and more often than not, they do not meet these expectations when they finally meet face-to-face.

Even though technology has dramatically altered the way college students interact, there is still hope for one-on-one interactions.

?I think it (technology) can certainly have a negative effect on people, younger or older, but I think there is also those safety nets for ensuring that people still are able to develop those interpersonal skills to have those one-on-one interactions,? Manchala said.

OBAMA WINS SECOND DEBATE! | Weekly World News

Pundits on all major networks agree? Barack Obama annihilated Mitt Romney in tonight?s ?townhall debate.

All eyes were on Hofstra University Tuesday night for the second presidential debate between President Barack Obama and his opponent, Mitt Romney. ?The town hall format gave both candidates a chance to shine.

According to 100% of pundits polled by democratic pundits, President Obama won the debate in dramatic fashion. ?Hands down. He won,? said Paul Begala. ??He destroyed Romney. He won before he even started. ?As soon as President Obama smiled at the crowd, he won. ?Mitt Romney showed his true self tonight. ?He proved himself to be a man who would kill a cancer patient if he had the chance, or throw an old woman off a cliff. ?That?s the Mitt Romney we saw tonight.?

All the democratic pundits called Barack Obama the victor even BEFORE the debate started. ??Democratic pundits are the best in the world, that?s why we get paid so much damn money,? said James Carville, a former Clinton adviser and top Democratic pundit.

?We wrote the headlines for the NY Times this morning, calling the debate for President Obama. ?That?s how sure we were that he was going to win,? said Stu Lightman, editor of the New York Times.

During the debate, President Obama reportedly called Mitt Romney out on his 47% remark, his Bain Capital misfires and the billions of dollars that Mitt Romney has hidden in a bunker in Sweden.

President Obama claims that Romney hid vast amount of cash in Sweden since 2002. ?Mitt Romney robbed children and senior citizens, then he had the cash shipped to Sweden. ?He?s a criminal. He should be locked up in the big house, not the white house,? ?David Axelrod reportedly said.

President Obama also pointed out that Mitt Romney wanted women to wear chastity belts again and that he wanted to send ALL hispanics back to Mexico.

The debate was held at Hofstra University, which is?25 miles away from New York City. The eighth largest mall in America, Roosevelt Field, sits nearby, along with the Nassau Coliseum. ?President Obama went shopping there before the debate ? he was looking for his ?big boy? shoes ? according to campaign insiders.

CNN?s Candy Crowley moderated the debate, but she was not allowed to speak. ?She used ?hand gestures to indicate to the candidates when it was their turn to answer a question. ?Crowley tried to say a few words, but she was under strict orders not to say anything at all about President Obama. ?She did have one question for Mitt Romney: ??Governor Romney, are you still robbing banks??

Crowley was not happy that she was silenced for the debate:

Mitt Romney is flying to Utah tonight to regroup and recharge. ?The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is going to perform a ?healing concert? for the Republican candidate. ??He?s probably going to get a pair of golden underwear at the ceremony? said a top Romney aide.

Meanwhile, President Obama celebrated his victory by giving every resident of Ohio $50,000 in cash ? provided that they vote for him (at least once) on November 6th. ??The President wants to help the little guys that help him,? said a campaign insider.

Oil price ends higher amid mixed economic data

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil finished slightly higher Tuesday, following a day of wavering between small gains and losses as traders mulled mixed economic data.

The Labor Department said the consumer price index rose 0.6 percent last month, the same as in August, with inflation still in check.

Meanwhile the Federal Reserve said industrial production was barely higher last month, and factory output showed a decline in the July-September quarter. Weak activity in the nation's manufacturing sector generally means less demand for oil.

Benchmark U.S. crude ended up 24 cents at $92.09 a barrel in New York.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, lost 40 cents to finish at $114 a barrel in London.

At the pump, the national average for a gallon of gas fell a little more than a cent from Monday, to $3.77.

Other futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Heating oil fell a penny to end at $3.20 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 5 cents to finish at $3.44 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline ended down a half-cent at $2.85 a gallon.

Amid ongoing economic crisis, EU celebrates 'Single Market Week'

The EU is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the single market this week, in part to point out that despite the economic crisis wracking Europe, the union has brought positive changes too.

By Peter Teffer,?Contributor / October 15, 2012

A statue of a globe painted with the EU flag and a peace dove stands in the garden of a church near the EU Council in Brussels, on Oct. 12. The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to promote peace and democracy in Europe, despite being in the midst of its biggest crisis since the bloc was created in the 1950s.

News reports about the European Union nowadays do not give much reason for celebration. Greece is on the brink of economic collapse, other European countries are also in severe economic troubles, and shrinking solidarity is going hand-in-hand with reviving stereotypes. Yes, the European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize last week, but this news was quickly met with cynical comments.

Nevertheless, the EU today kicked off a week of celebrations, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the single market, which allows Europeans and their goods to move around all 27 member states without borders or barriers. The Single Market Week encompasses events all around Europe, with various ?opportunities to discuss the main achievements of the Single Market.? Some of these include ?cheaper calls abroad,? ?safer toys,? and ?more rights for travelers,? according to documents handed out to attendees of the launch event of the Single Market Week at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The celebration comes at a time when citizens' trust in the European Union is at an all-time low, according to the most recent survey by Eurobarometer. Only 31 percent of EU citizens say they trust the European Union (mind you: they trust their national governments even less). Also, 28 percent have a flat-out negative view of the EU ? almost double the figure of six years ago.

According to some of the speakers today, the European Union doesn't always receive the credit it deserves. ?Citizens don't attribute their cheaper mobile phone bills to the single market,? said Malcolm Harbour, a member of the European Parliament for the British Conservative party, during a meeting with journalists. ?Sometimes we forget how much has been achieved. The free movement of people, students studying abroad ? citizens take that for granted.?

Mr. Harbour has a point. I arrived here in Brussels yesterday from the Netherlands, without realizing that my train didn't have to stop at the border. The only reason I brought my passport was to show it at the security check of the European Parliament. And it is not just free movement of journalists and other Europeans. If I want, I can buy as many Belgian waffles as I want without having to declare them at the border.

As European Commissioner Michel Barnier said: ?Our lives have been made easier.? But as with most advancements, we quickly take them for granted. So how to make the people more aware of these things? Mr. Barnier's answer was simple: ?We have to talk about it.? And that's what EU representatives will be doing this week.

Worker cooked to death at Bumble Bee seafood plant in California

California workplace safety officials are investigating how a worker at a Bumble Bee Foods seafood plant wound up being cooked to death in an industrial oven.

The accident happened Thursday morning at the Bumble Bee Foods factory in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.,?KTLA.com reported.

Police and fire personnel, responding to a 911 call from the business, found a worker dead inside a cooking device called a ?steamer machine,? according to KTLA.

The victim was identified as Jose Malena, 62, an employee at the factory for more than six years.

An initial investigation indicated that Malena ?was fatally injured when he was cooked in an oven,? California Division of Occupational Safety and Health spokeswoman Erika Monterroza told the Whittier Daily News.

Cal-OSHA is trying to determine how the man wound up in the oven and whether there were any workplace safety regulatory violations.

?The entire Bumble Bee Foods family is saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Malena family,? Bumble Bee Foods spokesman Pat Menke said in a statement to KTLA.

Operations at the plant were suspended until Monday.

Having A Baby? Keep Calm And Prepare For Parenthood With A ...

A few things in life can give you mixed feelings. A job promotion that brings more money but demands more time spent at the office, relocation to an exciting yet unfamiliar country, and parenthood. The prospect of being in charge of another human being's life can be both thrilling and daunting at the same time. It's thrilling because you've got a new addition to your family and it's daunting because you're going to have to be responsible for that child's upbringing and all the other things that come with it. The beauty of parenthood is that you can actually prepare for it. You've got nine months to learn about labour and birth, feeding and caring and bathing your newborn child, and the life you can expect to have with your baby. How does a montessori school figure into this equation?

Aside from being the ideal future school of your child, a montessori can become your own classroom for learning about parenthood through antenatal classes. Indeed, unlike your parents and their parents and all the other parents that came before them, you've got valuable resources within your reach to fully prepare for your new life as a parent. The National Health Service recommends new mums to check in at antenatal classes 30 to 32 weeks into their pregnancy and even as early as 24 weeks for mums expecting twins or triplets. There are classes held by midwives at local hospitals and other classes are conducted at family centres.

The antenatal classes that montessori centres hold are more about preparing new mums and dads xfor the joys of parenthood, and not just about labour and birth. By going to antenatal classes at a montessori, you'll have a more relaxed pregnancy, in spite of the defiant hormones. There are normally eight sessions, which will include relaxation and meditation techniques, an introduction to your child's psychological development, and toy making classes that teach you to craft stimulating and visual mobiles to promote your baby's cognitive development. You'll also learn and understand your child's development in the first five months of his or her life. Each session will enable you to emotionally prepare to better provide a more specific type of parenting to your child.

Antenatal classes are not only advisable for new mums but also for parents who may want a "refresher" course on parenthood. As one of the world's toughest jobs and one of the most honourable responsibilities you'll ever have, it only makes sense to learn and prepare for the imminent experience. So enquire about antenatal classes or join the baby groups montessori offers. And pretty soon, you'll find all those mixed emotions about parenthood transform into self-confidence and pure joy.

Inquire about the antenatal classes or enroll in the baby groups Brighton montessori offers.

    Seahawks shock Pats

Seattle's rookie QB outduels the Pats' Brady; Seattle wins 24-23 on late TD strike

    Image: Seahawks' Russell WilsonGetty Images

Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks celebrates beating the New England Patriots on Sunday in Seattle.

    updated 7:42 p.m. ET Oct. 14, 2012

SEATTLE - Tom Brady and the best offense in the NFL got upstaged by an undersized rookie.

In the final minutes, it was Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks making all the big plays.

"If guys didn't believe in him," Seattle safety Earl Thomas said, "I guarantee they believe in him now."

Wilson found Sidney Rice behind the secondary for a 46-yard touchdown with 1:18 remaining, and the Seahawks rallied for 14 points in the final 7:31 to stun the New England Patriots 24-23 Sunday.

The matchup between the Patriots' No. 1 ranked offense and Seattle's No. 1 defense instead turned in to a starring performance for Wilson. And a shocking rally that gave Pete Carroll a win in the first matchup against the franchise he coached for three seasons in the late 1990s. Carroll was bouncing around the sideline in celebration after one of his biggest pro victories.

"I hadn't even thought about that. That was a long time ago and there have been a lot of games," Carroll said. "I really love Robert Kraft, he's a great man and he's been great throughout the years about our separation of sorts. I respect the heck out of him. But I'm a competitor and, heck yeah, I want to win against those guys."

Wilson hit Braylon Edwards on fourth down for a 10-yard TD to get the Seahawks within 23-17. After a pair of holds by Seattle's defense, Wilson found Rice streaking open on a double move for his third touchdown pass of the game. Steven Hauschka's extra point gave Seattle (4-2) the lead with 78 seconds remaining.

Brady had a final chance to make up for all the opportunities the Patriots (3-3) squandered. Starting at his 20 with 1:14 left, Brady missed Brandon Lloyd then was sacked by Jason Jones, the first sack all day by Seattle. His pass for Aaron Hernandez, back after being out since Week 2 with an ankle injury, was incomplete, and Wes Welker was stopped short on fourth down.

Seattle's winning touchdown came after Carroll showed confidence in his defense. The Seahawks went three-and-out with 3:20 left and Carroll risked never seeing the ball again and punted.

Even though Seattle had three timeouts and the two-minute warning, it was still a risky proposition.

"I wasn't surprised. As a defense we want the game on our shoulders," Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner said. "We have the confidence in us; we know Pete has the confidence in us."

Seattle forced the Patriots into just their fifth three-and-out of the season and only 14 seconds elapsed before Zoltan Mesko punted. Leon Washington returned the punt 25 yards and Seattle started its winning drive at its 43.

Wilson faked a handoff and looked deep. Rice was on an option route, and the coverage directed Rice to the middle. After faking to the outside, he was wide open.

"It was a heck of a throw. When I came out of my break, the whole time I was looking at the ball in the air and it was so pretty," Rice said. "I was just running, I was like `You've got to catch up to it, you've got to catch up to it,' and I was able to track it down."

Wilson finished 16 of 27 for 293 yards, the best day of his young career. He added Brady to an impressive list of quarterbacks he's topped this year: Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton. It was also the fifth time in six games Wilson found himself in a late drive with the game on the line.

"I think I'm always comfortable no matter the situation, I think I'm just more experienced," Wilson said. "Being in those situations you have to trust what you see, you have to be quick with your decisions, but also believe in your decisions and just be decisive with the football."

Brady finished 36 of 58 for 395 yards and touchdown passes of 1 yard to Hernandez and 46 yards to Welker in the first half. Welker had 10 catches for 138 yards, his fourth straight game over 100. Brady topped 300 yards passing for the 49th time, but was intercepted in the second half by Richard Sherman and Thomas after going 179 attempts without being picked off. One of Brady's interceptions came in the end zone, yet another squandered chance by the Patriots.

New England came away with just one touchdown in six trips inside Seattle's 20. The most damaging came at the end of the first half when coach Bill Belichick opted to throw with 6 seconds remaining instead of kicking the field goal from the Seattle 3. Brady was flagged for intentional grounding and the ensuing time runoff ended the half.

"You lose by one point and here are a lot of things we could have done better to not be in that situation," Brady said.

Seattle's defense gave up a season-high 475 yards after not allowing any of its first five opponents to top 300. The Patriots went eight consecutive drives without punting, and ran 85 offensive plays to the Seahawks' 55, yet could not get the touchdowns to put Seattle away.

Brad Pitt blasts U.S. 'War on Drugs,' calls for policy rethink

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Brad Pitt has thrown his weight behind a documentary that blasts America's 40-year war on drugs as a failure, calling policies that imprison huge numbers of drug-users a "charade" in urgent need of a rethink.

The Hollywood actor came aboard recently as an executive producer of filmmaker Eugene Jarecki's "The House I Live In," which won the Grand Jury Prize in January at the Sundance Film Festival. The film opened in wide release in the United States on Friday.

Ahead of a Los Angeles screening, Pitt and Jarecki spoke passionately about the "War on Drugs" which, according to the documentary, has cost more than $1 trillion and accounted for over 45 million arrests since 1971, and which preys largely on poor and minority communities.

"I know people are suffering because of it. I know I've lived a very privileged life in comparison and I can't stand for it," Pitt told Reuters on Friday, calling the government's War on Drugs policy a "charade."

"It's such bad strategy. It makes no sense. It perpetuates itself. You make a bust, you drive up profit, which makes more people want to get into it," he added. "To me, there's no question; we have to rethink this policy and we have to rethink it now."

"The House I Live In" was filmed in more than 20 states and tells stories from many sides of the issue, including Jarecki's African-American nanny, a drug dealer, narcotics officer, inmate, judge, grieving mother, senator and others.

It also shows that although the United States accounts for only 5 percent of the world's population, it has 25 percent of its prison population. Additionally, African Americans, who make up roughly 13 percent of the population and 14 percent of its drug users, account for 56 percent of those incarcerated for drug crimes.

    FILM GETS STRONG REVIEWS

The Los Angeles Times called the film "one of the most important pieces of nonfiction to hit the screen in years," while the Hollywood Reporter said it was a "potent cry for a drastic rethinking of America's War on Drugs" and that the film "should connect solidly with viewers at a moment when it seems possible to change public attitudes."

Pitt, who like his partner Angelina Jolie is no stranger to humanitarian and social causes, said that after seeing Jarecki's documentary, coupled with his own involvement with aiding the victims of Hurricane Katrina, he realized the U.S. government's war on drugs may not just be about drugs alone.

"That was an interesting premise for me," the "Moneyball" star told Reuters. "I hadn't thought about it in that matter (before seeing the film), but certainly what we witnessed after Katrina proved the idea had validity."

Some critics have attributed the slow response of the U.S. government to Katrina in 2005, and the devastating flooding of poor areas of New Orleans, to race and class issues.

Now, Pitt believes the War on Drugs is the greatest obstacle for impoverished parts of society, including African Americans, from getting ahead.

"It's a never-ending cycle. But then when you look at it after what we experienced with Katrina - this is Eugene's point and what he wanted to investigate - it is actually being used to cap a portion of our society and holding them back, shackling them," the actor said, adding that he signed on as executive producer to help promote the documentary.
