Workers at a Florida animal shelter were forced to euthanized 18 dogs Saturday morning after a virus outbreak in the pound.

According to The Miami Herald, adoptions and dropoffs at Miami-Dade County?s Animal Services were placed on hold after workers noticed an airborne virus that attacks the dog?s nervous system.

Shelter employee Kathleen Labrada indicated that the euthanizing, which included both puppets and adults, occurred in order for the virus not to spread to the other 211 healthy dogs.

?There is no cure for distemper,? she said. ?The dogs end up having seizures; it?s terrible.?

People are still allowed to bring or adopt cats at the shelter as only dogs were affected by the virus.
